In-class exercise, Tuesday

Now that the actual Research Paper is in our sites, it will be helpful to look at a successful one closely.

Go to this site: http://www.writing.ucsb.edu/faculty/dean/50/2008papers/aiello.pdf , which features an award-winning essay from one of my previous Writing 50 sections (it was named the best Writing 50 paper of the year!)

Read the paper closely, then answer the following questions. Give yourself plenty of time to read it, think about it, and express your ideas.

1. Why do you think this essay was singled out as a good example of a research paper?
2. What do YOU think is the best aspect of it? Why?
3. What do you notice about the research?
4. How does reading this affect your plans for your own paper?

Since you are getting class time to complete this, your response is due by 11 pm this evening.

1. There is a lot of information in each paragraph.

2.I think the best part is how it's so informative while at the same time not boring me to death.

3. The research is well integrated into the essay and the use of quotes solidifies his examples. His works cited page includes a wide array of sources, most of which seem pretty credible.

4. Try to be more informative and integrating my quotes better as well as making my paper flow a bit more smoothly.

1. Why do you think this essay was singled out as a good example of a research paper?
I think that this essay was singled out as a good example of a research paper because of the quality of writing, its cohesiveness, and solid sources.
2. What do YOU think is the best aspect of it? Why?
The best aspect to me about this research paper its the fluidity, I think that there is very important in a research paper.
3. What do you notice about the research?
One thing I notice about the paper was the fusion of information and connection to the larger aspect of the paper. Every source had profound relevance.
Another thing I noticed was the most of his sources were much older.
4. How does reading this affect your plans for your own paper?
It helps me with writing my research paper as a path of which way to go to have an authentic research paper.

1. I think this paper was singled out because of the authors strong use of vocabulary, the uniqueness of the topic, the academic tone, and the credible research.
2. The aspect that stood out the most is that it always sounded academic. Not once did it sound like a student was writing it.
3. The research was all credible. All reviews and journal articles
4. This paper makes me realize that I have to look over every sentence and make sure that it sounds credible to an academic audience

2.The best aspect of the paper is writer's use of transitions, which reinforced the general cohesiveness of the paper.

3. The writer understands the paper's intended audiences. This can be seen in his thoroughness in explaining the origin of free jazz.

1. I think this essay was singled out as a good example of a research paper because all of the sources were credible and academic. It also provides a very clear thesis and direction.

2. The best aspect of the essay is its ability to catch my attention for eleven pages straight. The sentences vary in length and structure to prevent monotony.

3. None of his research was from "red flag" sources.

4. I plan on integrating my quotes/sources into my paper more smoothly, following it with a more in-depth analysis.

1. I believe this paper was singled out for its unique topic, structured paragraphs, and academic tone.

2.I think the best aspect of this paper is how each paragraph talks about one aspect/topic. I find the paper much easier and enjoyable to read when it is not rambling on or all over the place.

3. The research is evenly spread throughout the paper. Each claim by the writer is supported by research.

4. I have a better idea of academic tone as well as how to structure paragraphs in a more cohesive way. The paper also made me realize how important the introduction is when grabbing your readers' attention.

1. This paper was singled out as a great example for it's ability to flow from start to finish. Because of the powerful evidence supporting each point, you can tell the writer did a thorough job researching his topic and found clear, concise, and relevant information. Also, it is interesting! It did not lull me to sleep like many research papers do.

2.The best aspect of the paper is the professional, academic sound to it. The quotes used kept the paper interesting but did not downplay the scholarly tone to it.

3. The writer gives much explanation and background information for those who may not be as familiar with the topic and history of jazz. The sources he used were well-rounded and touched on everything. They varied in information from each other, but all united and could tie into the thesis.

4. This paper was a great model to demonstrate exactly how to integrate quotes into my writing and how to transition from one paragraph to the next.

2. The sentence structure and its flow throughout the entire paper. It keeps the reader going and there does not seem to be a "choke" point.

3. Very credible research and it integrated into the essay really well.

4. Be more direct and clear to the thesis of my paper without repeating myself.

1. It was chosen due to his great usage of sources for his topic, clarity, vocabulary, and the different field of research he discussed.

2. One aspect of his essay was that he had a previous paragraph that introduce the topic in a general aspect. The second paragraph went more in detailed with his focus or a specific person he wants to relate that topic.

3. The research has a variety of fields. Some of the field that I notice were Civil Right Movement, Black Nationalism, racism, economy, and the music industry. Overall it had many fields that were different and kept the reader entertain.

4. It change my perspective in not been afraid to go look for other topics that might relate to John Coltrane. Find as many information of Coltrane and see how it connects with my topic. I need to be more smooth, direct, informative, and clear, and grammatical correct.

1. This essay successfully uses sources to buttress his own argument rather than let the sources do the work for him.

2. I like how the points addressed in the introduction are fully developed in the preceding paragraphs.

3. The research is well integrated and is relevant to the topic at hand.

4. This is a good example of consistent use of an academic tone. I plan to utilize this as an example.
